Our specialist bereavement team offers support to anyone who experiences loss at our hospital and routinely receives praise from families for the sympathetic and gentle guidance they deliver in very distressing circumstances.

However, we also receive regular feedback which highlights the lack of suitable spaces for meaningful bereavement support to take place, away from the hustle and bustle of the busy hospital.

Grieving mums and dads often speak of the profound and lasting impact their experiences have had on their lives and how the hospital environment dramatically affected them both in the immediate aftermath of their loss and throughout their subsequent bereavement journey.

Our plans for Woodland House have been informed and shaped by our patients and families.

Funded entirely by charitable donations, Woodland House will be the first of its kind in the UK offering a light-filled, neutral environment where families can look after one another and spend as long as they need together in a place that feels like home. It will set the standard of care for pregnancy loss and neonatal death nationally.

Distinct features of Woodland House include:-

• A standalone centre in a peaceful setting
• Private and separate access from the main hospital entrance
• One large family room with kitchens and access to a private garden space
• Counselling rooms where trained bereavement staff can meet women and families to break difficult news or offer support in the immediate aftermath of loss
• A large communal lounge area for support groups
• A welcoming private outdoor space
• Provision for neonatal end of life care where appropriate
