Developing Hospital Environments

How our hospital looks and feels plays a big part in the overall experience of our patients and visitors, which is why we’re constantly listening to feedback and transforming spaces to help put them at ease

Baby Clinic transformed with fantastic murals

We’ve transformed the Baby Clinic into a bright and welcoming space for parents, toddlers and babies thanks to funds raised by one of our corporate supporters.

The clinic, which cares for premature babies until they reach the age of two years old, was in desperate need of a refresh. It is now a colourful marvel for our families to enjoy as they wait for appointments. All outpatient consultation rooms and office areas within the clinic have received the much-needed makeover.

The incredible designs featuring farmyard, space and underwater themes, are thanks to local artists Daniel and Adam, known as Mural Trader.

Feedback on the artwork has been fantastic, from patients as well as staff. We’re so thankful to Hortons Estate for its fundraising to allow this project to happen, as well as Mural Trader for their creative designs.

Sensory room at Lavendar House

A sensory room has been created inside Lavendar House which supports the clinical genetics team. The team, which sees a number of children with autism, sensory processing issues, developmental delay, intellectual disabilities or learning difficulties, received feedback from families that a sensory space was needed within the clinic to keep their little ones occupied and entertained. This distraction then allows them to have important conversations with consultants on the meaning of their child’s genetic condition.

Thanks to charitable funding, the team has converted one of its counselling rooms into the new sensory room, complete with games consoles and screens to cover a range of ages. The room also has soft play flooring, foam blocks, fibreoptic lighting, a sensory wall, a sensory trolley, ceiling art and a ball pool. Sensory mirrors have also been installed in the phlebotomy room to support patients who would otherwise find blood tests and minor procedures distressing.

Birth Centre artwork

The Birth Centre at our hospital is a unique environment offering women and their families the opportunity to give birth safely in a comfortable and relaxed ‘home-from-home’ setting, away from the main labour ward.

Apart from several birth affirmations and inspirational quotes, the main corridor was previously bare, which didn’t fit with the centre’s ethos and approach.

Charitable funds were used to commission 10 unique, informative and inclusive pieces of artwork which are reflective of the different patient groups who use the Birth Centre. The new artwork creates a warm and welcoming feel, helping to soothe and empower birth givers, as well as improve the morale of maternity staff.
