Who our MRI will support
MRI technology is unparalleled and the new scanner will be used by patients across the whole hospital, including for:
This includes the assessment of abnormally invasive placentas and pre-delivery planning for patients with other health conditions such as chronic liver disease, where there is an increased risk of bleeding during labour.
Scanning a baby in utero using an MRI can provide additional information over and above an ultrasound, improve the accuracy of prenatal diagnoses and inform treatment plans and choices. Approximately 270 patients a year require an in utero fetal MRI.
A variety of gynaecology conditions require an MRI scan to accurately diagnose conditions such as endometriosis, fibroids, ovarian cysts and gynaecological cancers. MRIs are also needed for women who experience pregnancy loss where uterine anomaly is suspected as well as girls who may have been born with uterine anomalies.
Babies within our hospital’s NICU sometimes require an MRI scan to help diagnose cardiac and brain injuries as well as strokes and seizures. However, only babies deemed well enough are able to travel to another hospital and require close supervision on the journey by a nurse and doctor.
